Quick-fire Questions

What is an SSD Drive?

SDD stands for Solid State Drive, an amazing technology that is replacing the traditional HDD’s (hard disk drives) of yesteryear. You might be more familiar with HDD’s as they are an integral component of computers. But, in the modern fast-paced world, SSD’s and their flash chip data storage system are your new best friend.

What’s the difference between SSD and HDD?

If you’re looking for a portable data storage unit, you might be unsure which type to go for.

Never fear! We’re here to help you untangle all the jargon and fully understand what you need to purchase.

Firstly, it’s important to note that SSD’s are different to HDD’s because they don’t contain any moving parts; they’re entirely digital. This makes them a lot less likely to fail, and have a longer life. It also means you don’t have to run any defragmentation software, which has been a big issue with HDD’s since their conception.

The bit that moves in a HDD is the read/write arm. This must be in the correct place in order to access your data, which makes it a lot slower than its digital SSD counterpart. Indeed, this is the key reason most people opt for SSD drives over HDD in their laptops – HDD’s just can’t keep up!

However, you should realize that exposing both of these types of device to certain elements can be a really bad idea. Namely, storage tech like this isn’t used to sudden or extreme power surges or loss. It also isn’t able to cope with high levels of magnetism, which might wipe the drive entirely.

Here are the main differences, pros and cons:

HDDSSD
Moving parts – read/write armEntirely Digital
Relatively slowerSuper fast
CheaperUsually pricier
High storage capacity (more for your money)High storage capacity (but less for your money)
Less durableMore durable
Great for creators with high capacity needsGreat for gamers and day-to-day users

Why Should You Get A Portable Small SSD Drive?

A lot of the issues above involve, but aren’t necessarily confined to, issues when you’re using HDD’s and SSD’s with a computer. But what if you don’t need, or can’t afford, a new computer as a means of upgrading your drive?

That’s where portable SSD’s come in – and they’re incredibly small SSD’s at that!

If your job or hobby involves transferring large amount of data between devices, a portable SSD is the only answer. They’re capable of transferring and carrying huge files at incredible speeds, proving you with an effective back up method and a great means of moving files about on the move. This can be between any devices, including DSLR’s, drones, mobiles and more.

Why is UM003 The Best Small SSD Drive?

RP-UM003 is RAVPower’s smallest ever SSD drive, meaning you can carry your world in your palm. This is an incredible feat of engineering and one which we’re very proud of.

Of its outstanding features, one that sets it apart is its durability. This is because of its advanced components, including the latest USB 3.1 Gen 2 interface. It’s also because we’ve made sure it’s drop tested from 1m and includes a cable that is bend tested 5000 times.

What’s more, the zinc alloy case and piano-like baked surface provide incredible cooling performance to prevent damage from overheating. Combined with its extensive compatibility, including with all USB-C devices, tablets, laptops, Macbooks, iPad Pros, as well as Android, Mac OS, and Windows, you will only need this one device for effective expansion of your device’s storage.

Finally, RP-UM003 is all about speed. It’s rapid – turbo charged, even – and has capabilities that will dramatically improve your day. It has a read/write rate to 540MB/s in optimal conditions with the host device and connection cables supporting USB 3. 1 Gen 2 and with UASP mode enabled. This is a lot more simple than it sounds, and essentially means you’ll be able to transfer media files in seconds.

  1. How do I UN-install the software that came with this SSD on a Mac. It’s royally screwed my system and won’t let any other drives mount and the fans are running continuously ever since installing. The ONLY way my machine works now is to run it in safe-boot mode!
